Hi all--
I wanted to take a moment to share my thoughts about a very well-run Drama Summer Camp a couple of weeks ago. I had the privilege of seeing David Shelton Ministries' Transformed Drama Camp not just from the perspective of a board member, but also as a parent. My 11 year-old son, Kyle, attended the camp and thoroughly loved it. The week culminated on Friday evening with a 2-hour performance filled with nearly ten different scenes featuring every single camper.
I noticed several things during this week. First, I noticed what an incredible rapport Tonya established with the kids, ranging in ages from 9 to 18. She is a great leader and teacher as well as an encourager. Second, I noticed how this diverse group of kids developed friendships with each other. I stopped in during Wednesday's lunch and saw several groups around the room eating together. No one was left out, everyone was included. There weren't any 'loners.' Finally, and probably most importantly, I noticed the skill, experience, and passion, being transferred from David, Deb, and Tonya into a new generation of performing ministers. This was exceptionally well-highlighted at the conclusion of Friday's performance when David and Debra were on stage, next to Tonya, with all 30+ kids in front. They received the applause of the room by gazing upwards and pointing toward Heaven, just as their mentor David has done for nearly 30 years of ministry--keeping Christ in the spotlight. As I witnessed this, I immediately thought to myself, "There's the multiplication. Right there in front of me."
Here are some thoughts from my 11 year-old son:
Kyle says, "I liked that we got lots of time to share our lives together and have fun at lunch and express our feelings when we're performing. I liked the costumes. They were pretty funny. Learning about God's Word was pretty cool, too. My favorite skit was the couple in the lunch room that ended in a kiss on the cheek!"
Thanks, David and Debra and Tonya, for an excellently run camp and, moreover, for pouring your lives into my son. I'm eternally grateful!
